Online course logistics

The online sessions will be broadcasted on twitch (to ensure that the stream is smooth; the link will be shown on the main page for each lecture), and we will take written questions on discord (server Geomatics, channel #geo1001).

After the stream is finished, we will go to discord to answer questions and to help.

It’s all experimental (it’s not as if we’ve taught remotely like this much in our lives…), we’ll adjust as we go.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Discord?

You can install the Discord app (better) or use it directly from the browser (still okay).

First, join the Geomatics server’s geo1001. This is a public text chat, which you can use to post questions, to discuss, or for general chatting.

There is also a voice channel for the course, which is called geo1001 voice channel. This is a public voice chat, which you join manually by clicking on it. If you join it, you will listen to what the others in the voice channel are saying (unless you deafen it -> headphones icon) and everything you say will be also heard by the others (unless you mute it -> mic icon). You’re free to use it anytime to discuss anything with the rest of your classmates (who are in the channel at that point).

Once you have joined the voice channel, you can also use it to share your screen (or a single window) with your classmates (Go Live -> icon with display and arrow). When you do so, a red LIVE icon will appear next to your username, and people will be able to click on your user and see your stream.

If you want to ask detailed questions to us, it’s probably better to do a separate one-to-one or small group call (with possible video and/or screen sharing). For that, let us know on the text channel. When one of us is free, we will add you as a friend (or you can do that anytime!), and we can then start the call.

Now, if you’re not together with your assignment groupmate or want to talk to other classmates, how about doing a one-to-one or group call with them?

Please wear a mask in the class

Our goal as teachers is to make every student as safe and comfortable as possible, and us too. We would like to avoid infections at the faculty, and thus we kindly ask you to wear a mask while in the room on Wednesdays for GEO1001.

Therefore, on Wednesdays when you can come to the faculty and use 02.Oost.500 and 02.Oost.600 rooms, masks will be available at the entrance.

We strongly encourage you to wear one; we will ourselves.

Important: this does not replace other rules set by the university such as if you have symptoms stay at home and get tested, and the 1.5m distance rule. In addition, this does not change the fact that only 3 students can be sitted per table at 1.5m distance minimum. Think of the mask use as an extra precaution that some people like to take in addition to the precautions already suggested by the university and government.

Some of the reasons why we think wearing a mask is safer for everyone, and why it might make some students more comfortable:
