Weixiao Gao
About Me
I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing at Wageningen University & Research, and remain affiliated with the 3D Geoinformation group at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) as a visiting researcher. I earned my PhD from TU Delft, where my research focused on the semantic understanding of urban scenes using textured meshes. Previously, I completed dual Master’s degrees in Geoinformation Science from Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
My expertise spans photogrammetry, computer vision, computational geometry, geoinformation, and remote sensing. My research aims to advance the interpretation of urban environments through enhanced 3D modeling techniques and to develop innovative applications that leverage 3D spatial intelligence.
Research Interests
- Geospatial Analysis and Urban Informatics: urban-scale data acquisition, processing, and management; cartography, geostatistics, and dynamic simulation; sensor networks and spatial analysis for smart city applications
- Computational Geometry: semantic understanding and 3D reconstruction; satellite and aerial image processing with applications in environmental monitoring and urban analysis
- 3D Geoinformation: computational geometry processing, BIM, and digital terrain modelling; immersive visualization (e.g., VR/AR) and human-computer interaction for urban simulation

- [Dec. 2025] I started a new postdoc position in the Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing at Wageningen University & Research, focusing on immersive technologies for satellite image interpretation.
- [Nov. 2025] My PhD thesis received the 2025 EuroSDR PhD Award and the EAASI Outstanding Thesis Award.
- [Sep. 2025] I won the Open Science Award from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft for my PhD research.
- [Jul. 2025] Three of our papers—focused on LoD3 modeling, roof material classification, and point cloud segmentation—have been accepted at 3DGeoInfo 2025. Additionally, one paper on data-driven energy simulation has been accepted at the 9th Smart Data Smart Cities Conference.
- [Feb. 2025] Our paper SUM Parts: Benchmarking Part-Level Semantic Segmentation of Urban Meshes has been accepted as a poster at the IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR 2025) in Nashville, the U.S..
