Final exam

The exam will be held at the scheduled date and time (April 17 @ 9:00), but it will be a 2-hour exam consisting of 12 open questions. You can expect variations of the work you did in the homework assignments, being asked to solve small problems and questions combining multiple lessons of the course. You will be free to check the course materials (videos/handouts/assignments) and any other materials you can find (eg books or the internet). Just don’t communicate with others.

The exam will be a Markdown (plain text) file that will be published at 8:55 here. You should download it to your computer, add the answers by directly editing the file, and upload it through a Dropbox request here. Exams will be accepted until 11:05, so please avoid problems by uploading it at 11:00 at the latest.

Markdown files look like plain text with minimal formatting, like this. You can edit Markdown files with any text editor, including whatever you use for Python programming. Some possibilities: Sublime Text (my preferred option), Atom, VS Code, Notepad++.

If you have any questions during the exam, you can send Ken (kenohori#5365) a DM on Discord. Email is also fine.

If something goes seriously wrong (eg sudden illness or internet going down), do not worry. Just contact Ken as soon as you can for alternative arrangements (most likely an oral exam through a video call).

Labs

The contact hours will still be on the same dates and times, but everything will be done online using Discord on the Geomatics server.

Discord?

You can install the Discord app (better) or use it directly from the browser (still okay).

First, join the Geomatics server’s geo1004-lab text channel. This is a public text chat, which you can use to post questions, to discuss, or for general chatting.

There is also a voice channel for the course, which is called Geo1004 voice channel. This is a public voice chat, which you join manually by clicking on it. If you join it, you will listen to what the others in the voice channel are saying (unless you deafen it -> headphones icon) and everything you say will be also heard by the others (unless you mute it -> mic icon). You’re free to use it anytime to discuss anything with the rest of your classmates (who are in the channel at that point).

Once you have joined the voice channel, you can also use it to share your screen (or a single window) with your classmates (Go Live -> icon with display and arrow). When you do so, a red LIVE icon will appear next to your username, and people will be able to click on your user and see your stream.

If you want to ask detailed questions to us, it’s probably better to do a separate one-to-one or small group call (with possible video and/or screen sharing). For that, let us know on the text channel. When one of us is free, we will add you as a friend (or you can do that anytime!), and we can then start the call.

Now, if you’re not together with your assignment groupmate or want to talk to other classmates, how about doing a one-to-one or group call with them?

It’s a bit of an experiment for us too, but we’re sure it will work out.

See you all online,

Ken (kenohori#5365), Hugo (hledoux#8017) and Ravi (rypeters#0368)
